On Tuesday, January 23, Jemimah Rodrigues and Sunil Gavaskar entertained the audience with a duet singing performance at the Naman Awards.
For the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its annual Naman Awards presentation on Tuesday, January 23, in Hyderabad.
A number of current and former cricket players attended the historic event. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and standout batsman Jemimah Rodrigues mesmerized the audience with a duet singing performance during the ceremony. Jemimah’s passion for music is evident from the several videos in which she can be seen belting out songs on her guitar. But many were taken aback by Gavaskar’s singing voice, as fans discovered an alternate side to the renowned cricketer-turned-commentator.
On her official ‘X’ account, Rodrigues posted a 39-second clip in which she can be seen singing along to the well-known Bollywood song “Kya Hua Tera Waada” from the movie “Hum Kisise Kum Nahi” while holding Gavaskar’s hand. Gavaskar and Jemimah exchange handshakes before to the end of the video, and then the audience starts chanting “once again.” The former laughed heartily when he heard the chanting.
In the video’s caption, Jemimah talked about her experience singing with the iconic cricket player. She also disclosed that the 74-year-old came up with the concept of the two of them doing a stage show.
“I would have said no way if someone had informed me that I would be singing on stage alongside Sunil Gavaskar sir one day! However, THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. PS: The idea to perform a group vocal on stage came from Sunil Sir. What a myth,” Jemimah penned.
Deepti Sharma took home the Best International Cricketer — Women award for 2019–2020 and 2022–2023 at the glamorous occasion. The same award was given to her teammate Smriti Mandhana for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 seasons.
In addition to receiving other noteworthy awards, former all-rounder Ravi Shastri and wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer received the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Awards in appreciation of their ongoing contributions to Indian cricket and the BCCI since their respective national debuts.
