Former cricketers are concerned about Hardik Pandya’s long-term captaincy prospects since he gets hurt far too frequently.
Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has stressed the importance of Hardik Pandya in the Indian team. Due to an injury sustained in a World Cup match against Bangladesh in October 2023, Hardik has not been able to play. Even though Hardik acknowledges that he is prone to injuries, Yuvraj believes the team’s management should give him adequate time to heal because he is a vital player. Yuvraj believes that India should consider additional options when it comes to captaincy, especially because the T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place later this year following the Indian Premier League (IPL).
When it came to leading the team in the game’s shortest format, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma was missing from the picture after the T20 World Cup in 2022.
In T20Is, Hardik had guided the team throughout his absence. This week, Rohit played his first Twenty20 international match against Afghanistan in over 14 months. Although there has been talk recently over Rohit’s T20I future, Yuvraj believes Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill can also lead the side in an emergency.
India needs Hardik, who is a vital element of the team. He is prone to injuries, so we must give him time to heal and become more at ease. We need to bring out the best in him. We require additional options when it comes to leadership. One such player is Suryakumar Yadav, who has led India in Twenty20 Internationals. Shubman Gill is the IPL captain,” Yuvraj said to Times of India.
Although he acknowledges that experience cannot be replaced, Yuvraj believes that Hardik’s selection to take Rohit’s place as the Mumbai Indians’ captain for the 2024 Indian Premier League was made with long-term ambitions in mind.
“As you age in franchise cricket, things constantly get harder. It makes sense that every team would want to elevate a young athlete they have invested a lot of money in. I’ve also been in this predicament. Then again, experience cannot be substituted. With his vast experience, Rohit has shown himself. But a franchise must have a long-term perspective,” he said.
