In an unpredictable match, RCB overcame GT in Bengaluru to climb to seventh place in the standings.
After defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 52 of the current season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their third straight game and moved up to seventh place in the Indian Premier League’s IPL 2024 points standings.
The decision by RCB to bowl first appeared to be the right one when GT was reduced to 23/3 during the powerplay thanks to a double strike by Mohammad Siraj (2 for 29). GT was reintroduced by M Shahrukh Khan (37 off 24), David Miller (30 off 20), and Rahul Tewatia (35 off 21), but with Cameron Green (1 for 28),
With captain Faf du Plessis (64 off 23) at his most lethal, RCB set the tone for the chase with an opening partnership of 92 against Virat Kohli (42 off 27). And that’s when everything got crazy. Joshua Little (4 for 45) and Noor Ahmad (2 for 23) led the RCB to a collapse in which they went from 92/0 to 117/6 in just five overs. However, du Plessis had caused too much damage during the powerplay, so Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh, who helped the RCB reach home with 38 balls remaining, were not in any real danger from this collapse.
Here are all the key statistics from the 2024 IPL encounter between RCB and GT:
- The powerplay total of 23/3 by Gujarat Titan is the lowest by GT and the lowest of the 2024 IPL.
24 – With CSK, this was RCB’s 24th IPL match in which they had bowled out the opposition, making it a tie for second most such instances. MI topped the list with 35 of these occurrences.
6 – Faf du Plessis became the sixth player to reach 10,000 T20 runs by innings with 349 innings. Before him were Babar Azam (271), Chris Gayle (285), Virat Kohli (299), David Warner (303), and Aaron Finch (327).
2 – Faf du Plessis reached his fifty in the second-fastest time for the RCB in 18 balls. With his 17-ball blitzkrieg against the Pune Warriors in 2013, Chris Gayle owns the record.
4 – The fourth time an RCB player scored 50 or more runs during a powerplay was supplied by Faf du Plessis. By the way, Chris Gayle was the artist behind each of the prior three.
5 – RCB’s powerplay score of 92/1 is the team’s highest during that phase and tied for the fifth-best powerplay total in the IPL. It’s interesting to note that this season has produced four of the top six powerplay scores in IPL history.
5 – RCB ended the game with 38 balls left, which is the fifth-most balls left in a successful chase in the IPL when teams are aiming for 140 or more runs.
